How Often Should You Really Get Your Teeth Cleaned?

October is National Dental Hygiene Month, so it's a good time to talk about something we get asked all the time: how often do you actually need a professional cleaning? You've probably heard "every six months" your whole life. For a lot of people, that's a perfectly good schedule. But it isn't right for everyone, and at Del Amo Dental Group in Torrance, we think your care should fit you — not a one-size-fits-all rule.

Is Every Six Months Enough?

If your teeth and gums are healthy, twice a year is a common and sensible rhythm. Still, the right timing depends on your own situation: how your gums are doing, whether you've had gum disease before, how quickly plaque and tartar build up, your overall health, and your personal risk factors. Some people do better with more frequent visits. Others with excellent oral health may be able to stretch the time between cleanings. Your dentist can help you figure out which group you're in.

Why Cleanings Matter

Even if you brush and floss faithfully, plaque finds its way into the spots that are hardest to reach. Left alone, it hardens into tartar (also called calculus), and no amount of brushing at home will remove it. A professional cleaning helps to:

  • Clear away plaque and tartar
  • Lower your risk of cavities and gum disease
  • Keep your gums healthy
  • Polish away surface stains
  • Catch small problems before they become big ones

Each visit also gives us a chance to see how your teeth and gums are changing over time, which is often how we spot things early.

Regular Cleaning vs. Deep Cleaning

Regular Cleaning

These two get mixed up a lot, but they're quite different. A regular cleaning is for patients who don't have active gum disease needing more extensive treatment. We remove plaque, tartar, and surface stains to keep your mouth healthy.

Deep Cleaning

A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) may be recommended if you've been diagnosed with periodontitis. It cleans plaque and tartar from the root surfaces below the gumline and helps calm the inflammation that comes with gum disease. It's a treatment, not a routine cleaning, and we recommend it based on what we find during your periodontal exam.

What Happens If You Skip Cleanings?

Life gets busy, and we understand. But when visits slip, plaque and tartar can quietly build up. For some people, that can lead to:

  • Gingivitis
  • Gum disease
  • Tooth decay
  • Stubborn bad breath
  • Gum recession linked to periodontal problems
  • Tooth loss, in advanced cases

The tricky part is that early gum disease often doesn't hurt. Your mouth can feel completely fine while something is brewing, which is why regular checkups are worth keeping even when nothing seems wrong.

When to Call Us

Make an appointment if you notice:

  • Bleeding when you brush or floss
  • Bad breath that won't go away
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Gums pulling back from your teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Sensitivity or discomfort

None of these automatically means something serious, but each one is worth having checked.
